Madison's Baby Blog

Grady Ryan- born 7/20/10 7lbs. 3 oz.

SEE THE BUMP GROW!

Week 39:
Baby Grady is coming Tuesday... hopefully.  I'm being induced.  I won't be able to update my baby blog while I'm off, but I will send a pic of the baby for someone at work to post.  Thanks for all your well wishes!

Week 38:
Things are really getting crowded now that Grady might weigh more than 6 pounds and stretch beyond 20 inches. The baby is so big that his knees and elbows have to be constantly flexed or even folded. There are lots of hiccups now. They're the result of baby inhaling amniotic fluid as he practices his breathing, and they can be vigorous enough to see my clothes move. His lungs are most likely fully mature.

Week 37:
The baby could benefit from some extra days in the uterus, but he's full-term! He is likely to weigh 6 pounds, and he's probably close to 20 inches long now. But even the Doctor can't tell how big baby will be at birth.  That will have to be a suprise.

Week 35:
Now more than 5 pounds, baby might be more than 18 inches long and seriously competing for space in there. The abdomen may be stretched so large that some worry he is getting too big, but nature usually does a good job of matching up babies and moms.
(Let's hope so... cuz I am looking very WHALE like).

Week 34:
Baby now weighs close to 5 pounds, and he has nearly run out of room to move. (TELL ME ABOUT IT) That doesn't mean that he'll stop moving, but there is a change in the way he bumps and thumps. (YEAH- IT HURTS MORE!!)  By now he's closing his eyes when he's asleep and keeping them open when he's awake. He now has the ability to see, hear, learn, and remember.

Week 33:
During these final weeks of pregnancy, baby enters his "finishing period." This is exactly what it sounds like: baby's organs, skeleton, and body are well formed, but he needs a little more time to finish getting ready to take on the world. By now he weighs a good 4-1/2 pounds and measures more than 17 inches long. His toenails have completely grown in, as has any hair on his head.  As much heartburn as I've had- I bet there is a FULL HEAD of hair!

Week 32:
Baby is practicing his breathing movements, even though he’s not actually breathing air yet. I can feel those hiccups! He’s reacting to light, testing his lungs, and getting cramped for space. Fingernails and toenails have grown so much that he’ll need a clipping when he arrives. He’s begun a routine but sleeps much of the time!

Week 31:
Heartburn is KILLING me these days.  Plus, everyone keeps saying I look like I'm about to pop now.  Forget 2 months... so that's not the MOST fun thing to hear.  Unless it actually happens!

Week 30:
Well... I guess I'm not so far ahead anymore.  The doctor said I'm measuring only about a week ahead now.  But I sure feel big!  LOL!

Week 29:
baby in the 29th week of pregnancy might be best described as long and strong! Grady probably weighs almost 3 pounds. From crown to rump he is about 10 inches long, about the length of a large cucumber.

Week 28:
You can just call me "the fatness" if you want from now on.  OMG... I officially now HATE posting these pics.  It's not the belly that bothers me, definitely the arms and legs.  Good thing is the Dr. says I'm measuring ahead by a couple weeks so he might be coming early!

Week 27:
The baby is getting downright chubby as fat deposits continue accumulating beneath his skin, which looks pink because blood vessels are so close to the surface. The placenta is now almost fully developed. (Doc told me my baby is already 2 1/2 pounds)

Week 26:
Baby is 2-pounds now and viable outside of the womb; he’s developing surfactant, a substance to help lungs expand so he can breathe. While he still needs to gain fat, his bones and tissue are growing and getting stronger.

Week 25: From head to toe, baby is measuring at about 12 inches and is 2 pounds.  I can feel him kicking and jabbing as things get cramped in there.

Week 24: This is my sixth month of pregnancy! Baby weighs nearly 1-1/2 pounds and is the size of a half-gallon of milk.

Week 23:
It’s only 17 weeks until the baby’s ready to pop out! His skin is still transparent, but now he's starting to gain that healthy baby fat. He’s over a pound now and is the size of a loaf of bread. Talk about a bun in the oven!

Week 20... I think I'm just geting wider now.  Ew!!!

Similac Baby Formula Recall
Thursday 09-23-2010 8:16am CT

From webmd.com:
Sept. 22, 2010 -- Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories says it is recalling about 5 million containers of its top-selling Similac powdered infant formula due to possible contamination by beetles or larvae of the bugs.

Abbott spokeswoman Melissa Brotz tells WebMD that the product being recalled is sold in cans and plastic containers, and that only the powdered versions of the popular infant formula is involved in its “proactive” action.

Similac sold in liquid form is not part of the recall, Brotz says.

“We know that parents place a lot of trust in our Similac brands and delivering anything less than the highest quality infant formula to them is unacceptable to us,” she tells WebMD. “We will do whatever is necessary to maintain that trust in the coming weeks and months.”

Recalled Similac Could Cause Illness

The company said in a news release posted on the web site of the FDA that an internal quality review detected the “remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced” in one of its manufacturing facilities.

Abbott says the FDA had determined that while the formula containing the beetles “poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.”

A doctor should be consulted if symptoms persist for more than a few days, Abbott says.

It also says the powder infant formulas include Similac powder sold in plastic containers and certain product lines sold in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans.

It says consumers desiring more information or to find out if they have the product in their possession should go the web site
similac.com and type in the lot number. Or people may call 800-986-8850.

Abbott says it has begun an investigation into the issue.

Holger Liepmann, executive vice president of Abbott Nutrition, says in a news release it is taking steps to assure parents that the company’s products “meet the highest quality standards for which they are known.”

Liepmann also says the company regrets “any inconvenience this situation poses to parents and consumers.”

The plant involved is in Sturgis, Mich., Brotz says. The recall involves Similac products sold in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and other markets in the Caribbean.

Daycare dilemma
Tuesday 09-14-2010 6:24am CT

It's hard enough to leave this sweet face every day... but what do you think about the daycare 5:1 ratio?  That's the law- 5 babies to one teacher.  I like my daycare, but I am just SURE that one person can not watch that many babies properly.  I mean, yes, they will get their diapers changed and fed... but is there any time for cuddling, playing and rocking?

Maybe I need to look into a home daycare?  Or, are you someone who works at a daycare and think I'm wrong?  I wish there were cameras so I could check in and see what happens when I'm not there.

I will miss being home with the baby and the little routine we had gotten into... which included watching "Grey's Anatomy" on Lifetime every day.  But I'm ready to get back into this.  I love my job and can't wait to get going again. Thanks for listening and checking in.

I will be posting more pics of my man and of course dishing on life as a Mom of a new baby right here every week.  Check back for the latest.

BIG BABY NEWS!!!
Thursday 07-15-2010 7:38am CT
Well- I am getting induced.  Tuesday, July 20th.  YAY!  I went to the Dr. yesterday and I waddled in there.  I'm just so miserable... can barely walk these days.  I wasn't begging, or even asking to be induced... she asked me if I would be interested and I JUMPED on that chance!  LOL!  I heard the contractions may be more painful if they are induced, but I mean- the pressure down there right now is so bad- it has GOT TO END!  I'm ready.

Plus- now that I know the date- I can make sure Josh will be coming back from Wisconsin with my parents by the time the baby comes.  I know he is so excited about becoming a big brother and wants to be here for the action!

So- tomorrow (Friday) will be my last day before maternity leave.  Thank you so much for following along with my pregnancy and all your emails and well wishes.  I will see you in about 7 weeks!

Much love- Madison
Anytime now....

Well, I'm ready for Grady to get here.  I was SURE I wouldn't be impatient in these last two weeks-- knowing that there is a LOT of baby time to come, I told myself to enjoy this time when I can nap freely- do what I want whenever I want to... but I'm ready.

Josh Jr is up in Wisconsin visiting his Grandparents and I'm ready for him to come home... and mostly I'm ready to just not be so uncomfortable.

Some of the signs that labor is coming have started happening... I think I have dropped.  Do you think so from the pictures to the left?  Maybe I am just HOPING I've dropped.  I also have been feeling contractions and I've been nesting.  Maybe he is coming soon.

I have a Dr. appointment today and if I hear any big news- I will let you know.
3 weeks to go- baby update
Tuesday 07-06-2010 6:40am CT

Well, we did our couples shower last weekend... I'm glad we went that route.  More laid back than your average baby shower, I hope everyone had a good time.  I got such nice stuff- and I'm happy to say that I really don't need much of anything else anymore!  I got a car seat, high chair, swing, playpen, diaper genie and lots of clothes and diapers.  My mom finished me up buying me the stroller/car seat combo when I went home this weekend.  Thanks to all my awesome family and friends.  The sweethearts at work are throwing me a work baby shower on Friday, which was unexpected and really nice.  Once that one is over- baby can come any time!  LOL!!!

My last appointment at the doctor was good.  I wanted to know if I was dialated at all before we made the final decision to take a trip up to Wisconsin to visit my family for the 4th of July.  Well- I wasn't-so that made me feel better about going.  My doctor cautioned me against traveling- but we decided to risk it.  We left Wednesday for the LONG drive- and it was pretty uncomfortable... but we made it.  We stopped halfway and stayed overnight which helped.

It was worth it- a very nice visit and MUCH cooler weather.  Highs at 80 and lows in the 60's felt GREAT!  We spent the time at my family's cabin on a lake in Northern Wisconsin just relaxing and playing- fishing- 4-wheeling-swimming.  Well I tried to swim, but I will be honest- the water was WAY too cold for me.  After living here for 10 years, I'm spoiled!

I go back to the doctor tomorrow and weekly until the baby comes.  Now I'm just starting to get nervous about the delivery.  It's been 7 years- I wasn't really worried until I started remembering how painful those contractions were.  I'm NOT looking forward to that.

So... that's about all.  The feet are still a little swollen- mostly at night but Doc says it's all normal pregnancy stuff.
SWELLING stinks!
Friday 06-25-2010 9:28am CT

Those are some fat feet, huh?  Swollen is what they are.   I didn't have this problem with Josh Jr when I was pregnant the first time.  But last night- I was working an event and noticed my feet started hurting, they were numb and just ached.  Well when I looked down, HORROR!  They were huge.   It hurts to be off them and it hurts even more to stand on them.  Gosh- one more month of this??? I don't know if I can handle that.

Well when I got home- I started searching the internet for remedies.  Even though I knew about the only thing I could do was elevate them- I was still hoping.

I found a bunch of articles about SUDDEN swelling and preclempsia.  So, I called the nurse and she said I would need to get my blood pressure checked.  It was about 11pm at that point- so the only option was a fire station or a 24 hour pharmacy or Walmart.  I found a pharmacy and sat down in the little machine (a little worried).  It was high- 138/89.  She told me to call if it was over 140/90.  So I took it again and again and it went down a little each time.  So I didn't call back.  If I did have higher than 140/90 they were gonna make me go into a labor room to get checked- at midnight.  Ick!

So- I avoided that- but today my feet are still HUMONGOUS and it hurts.

I guess I didn't realize how lucky I was last time to avoid this part.  Any advice from other Mom's who went through it or are going through it??

Thanks!  I'm off on vacation next week and we were going to visit my parents in Wisconsin at the lake, but I'm a little worried about that now.  I have a Dr. appointment early next week and I'll find out what they think before we make the ultimate decision... but if we don't go- I truly hope the baby comes early.  I already pulled Josh out of summer camp and really wouldn't have an option for him if the trip doesn't work out.  My parents were going to keep him and bring him back down here in 2 weeks.

Ughh... decisions, decisions.  Hope you have a GREAT weekend, and I will try to get on here next week with an update.  Thanks for checking in.
